"I am no child, nor am I a pawn or marionette to be controlled."

My WIP does not have a name yet so I have been calling it Teyrhune. It follows Lailsund, a boy who has barely seen fourteen winters. He has just been crowned King of Zanyrea at the behest of his dying mother. He has discovered that he is half Daekarran, a magical race from a neighboring kingdom to the East. Zanyreans carry a deep-seated mistrust and dislike for the magic-wielders, and they are often arrested if caught using their abilities within the Zanyrean borders. The boy now finds himself in a peculiar position, as he is now King and the only way to protect himself and keep the throne is to learn to use his gift.

With thoughts of controlling the child king, members of a radical group founded by the traditionalists within the government have begun to move against the family. Perpetrating the deaths of the boy’s father, older brother, and soon taking the life of his mother, they have manipulated Lailsund into the seat of power. They believe the young anti-social book-lover will be easily influenced to do their bidding and bring back the regime his father worked his entire life to reform.

Lailsund finds himself fighting for his life and kingdom with only his dying mother Saphira, her loyal guard Uldermond, her childhood teacher Merna, and King’s guard Leolseth standing between him and destruction. Can he find the strength within himself to gather allies and protect his world?

King Lailsund Shallendir

Age:  Barely 14                   Race:  Zanyrean/Daekarran

Height:  5’6”                        Weight:  123 lbs.

Lailsund has just been crowned King of Zanyrea at the behest of his mother Queen Saphira, who is dying of a mysterious illness. He is young; however, he is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. He knows it is his duty to take the throne and does so willingly, but he has never wanted the responsibility of ruling the nation. His life has always been devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, and he cares little for the inner workings of the political system. He takes his role seriously, though, and is resentful toward those who see him as a child and easily manipulated.

He has just learned of his Daekarran lineage and raised as a Zanyrean, he is well aware of their deep-seated fear and distrust of the magic-wielding race.  The Zanyreans, in general, have a fear and distrust of anything they consider unnatural.  There are many who have grown to accept and understand these abilities, but those seated within power have clutched to their traditions and pressured the former king into hiding his wife’s nationality and her gift.  Lailsund is now confronted with this knowledge and must come to terms with their ignorance and his ever-growing power, in order to fulfill his mother’s dying wish that he use his gift to protect himself and his people.
"I know what you think of me. I know what all of you think. You are wrong! I am no child, nor am I a pawn or marionette to be controlled."
